I need to repair the two prong plug of an older model electric heater. I want to add a three prong plug for safety. Can I replace the two wire cord with a three wire cord? If so, do I attach the ground wire to the metal cabinet of the electric heater?

Yes for both questions. Just be sure the cord and plug is rated for the supply voltage and amperage draw of the heater.
