I hear all kinds of conflicting information on "electronic water softeners". A coil or field of magnets and signals ionize the water from exterior of piping. Do these plug in systems really work. Priced from $79 up to $1000. Is it snake oil or not!

Snake oil from what I know.

That is what I can figure from a common sense angle. I believe we agree that they are not

I am always a bit surprised that companies can advertise things they know do not really work like they say. Reading the fine print HardnessMaster Electronic Water Conditioner/Softener (http://www.equinox-products.com/HardnessMaster.htm#How%20does%20the%20HardnessMast er™%20work?) some of these do not really claim to make soft water but keep the minerals in solution so they don't build up on pipe.
