I am getting ready to do the rough in on a renovation project and wanted to check the allowable amount of receptacles for a 20 amp breaker using #12awg wire. Our electrician will close but I needed an allowable amount of receptacles per 20A circuit. Any help is appreciated. Arjay808.

There is not specific limit on the number of receptacles. Your electrician will know this already.

In a residence, there is no NEC Code imposed limitation.

I believe that there is a limit of 10 receptacle outlets on one 20 amp branch-circuit in commercial environments.

That said, the imposed limitation is wattage. 120 X 20 = 2400 watts.

The problem is that with cord attached devices you have no way to know what will be the actual load you are serving.

For example, if you have ever installed a early model laser printer in your home, you would see the lights dull usually every 4 seconds.

That's the reason why they were recommended to be on a dedicated 20 amp line.

Personally I would keep to the 10 receptacles as a general guideline.
