I have a Craftsman 5HP 22" snow thrower 536 886120. Came as a "gift". (Electric start)

Will not start. Removed spark plug, poured a little gas the engine, replace the plug, it started and ran for about 4 seconds. Gas is in the tank. Probably bad carburetor?
I think in was stored for about a year and not used.
I have found kit to rebuild the carburetor at Sears. Part #31840 in the manual

How much trouble can I get into by rebuilding the carburetor without directions?

Sounds like the gas in the tank has polymerized. You'll need to clean out the fuel lines and carburetor. Try carburetor cleaner.

It's best to drain the gas tank at the end of the season. Some people also use stabilized gas. It can help. Unstabilized gas can lead to varnish buildup in the fuel lines and carburetor.
