I was told by an A/C contractor in Houston, Texas that I should replace my compressor/condensor unit since it's 10 years old. He said that after Dec 2009, I will have to buy the new, entire 410 system due to changes in the law. Is this true. If true, any advice would be appreciated. My unit is running very good.

Thank you in advance,
Jim

As of January 2010 no more R-22 condensing units will be built except for what is in the pipe line. If your unit is working OK I would hold off until it goes out then change both the inside coil and outside condensing unit to R-410A since that will be the only offering as of now.

This has been more of a big deal than necessary. Suggesting you replace your working R-22 unit just for the heck of it is just a sales job.

If the system is 10 years old, it should be replaced entirely WHEN IT FAILS. Using the existing indoor coil with a new condensing unit is a bad idea. I agree with HVAC1000... sales pitch.
