Greetings Experts! :) Usually, I am the one answering questions on these types of message boards, although this is my first time on this particular board. However, I need some help now in identifying a model number for an older Murray riding lawn mower, and perhaps locating an original owners manual (or copy) for it.

Background: I recently purchased a used Murray riding lawn mower/tractor. Unfortunately, the model sticker under the seat is missing. I have spent literally HOURS searching the internet, researching parts schematics and making phone calls trying to identify the model number of this mower. I have narrowed it down to one of three models; 40530X-192A, 40530X-92A or 40530X-83A. I have contacted Murray (now a division of Briggs and Stratton) and they have absolutely NO information for models built prior to 2005.

Research: I have my doubts that this is a 40530X-83A since the parts schematic for this mower does NOT list a "Warning Decal" (part number 44X4308), which is listed for the 40530X-192A and the 40530X-92A - and there IS a warning sticker on this mower. However, I'm not sure I trust this information.

There is also a part number on the dash for the decal - 44X6457. I was hoping that this was a model specific decal, but I can not locate a parts source that will tell me which models this decal fits.

Does anyone know of a part number that is model specific which could be used to zero in on which of the three models listed above my mower could be?

Of the three models, both the 40530X-192A and 40530X-92A use the same parts list document (F-97707) and Owners Manual (F-97706). The parts list document and the Owners Manual for the 40530X-83A are different part numbers (F-97815 and F-97814 respectively). So I am assuming that if I can rule out the fact that this is NOT a 40530X-83A, and since the owners manual and parts list document for the other 2 models are identical, I would therefore know what I need.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration. :D

Hi,
I think you have the info you need. I had not realized that a 3 digit vendor number was in existence for Murray (the X192 part) but both are 1997 models. I found both breakdows at:
Murray Lawn Mower Manuals Murray replacement parts for murray Mowers (http://www.outdoordistributors.com/Murray/Murraypartslists.html)
Murray does not have old manuals because of "bad blood" with the purchase. It happened previously when they bought Noma and truckloads of parts "disappeared" while in route to another warehouse.
Peace,
Clarke

Thanks, Clarke. I am using several sites to do the research, and the one you link to is one of them. However I'm still mystified by the actual model number. I am aware that the last few digits of the model number are the vendor code. I was told all three of the model numbers I listed were sold by Wal-Mart, based on this code. However, I was also advised that the 40530X-83A was also sold by Blanes Farm and Market.

If I can eliminate the possibility of this being a 40530X-83A, then I can start my search for the F-97706 and F-97707 manuals. Although, the F-97707 is not really needed since the parts schematics are readily available online.

Thanks again for your response and effort.

... the quest for the elusive truth continues...

My Murray has the 44x6457 on the dash. It is model no. 38515 x 92 with a 38 inch Blade no. 495104. This may be yours.
