My son is 20 years old. He was arrested last night (saturday) for stealing a gun from a person having a party. He finally confessed to tossing the gun in the bay. He was arrested on third degree felony and will appear in fromt of the judge in the morning. What can we expect? Will he be offered a public defender? Will there be a bond or can he be eleased on signature bond? What will the outcome be? Jail time or probation?

First his biggest mistake so far is confessing, He never should have said anything until he spoke to an attorney first.
The public defender may depend on his ability to afford one, and even the bail.
But yes bail will be set at the first appearance normally.
He needs to talk with the attorney, and perhaps work out a deal.
It would have been easier if he had not confessed, they would have to prove he stole it first and a deal is a lot easier without a confession.
Has he any other convictions ?
And why would he ake a gun just to throw it away, does not make sense
