Hi All,

I am an international student working as full time employee in Roswell GA on OPT.
I am not still on H 1 B status.

It would be a great help if you could inform me what are the taxes that are deductible from my salary. Currently there are 4 types of taxes that are being deducted from my account.
1) FED W/H.
2) State W/H
3) Social Security Tax FICA
4) Medcare FICA

I think only FED W/H and STATE W/H should be deducted from this pay as well but was not sure for the next two. If you have any links from IRS that support this point please send that across to so that it can forward it to the HR dept.

Thanks,
Chinmay

If you have not completed 5 years on F1/OPT, then your OPT income is exempt from SS tax and Medicare tax. You will pay federal income tax and state income tax.
Ask your employer to stop withholding FICA taxes during OPT and refund you the FICA taxes already withheld.

Download IRS Pub 519 from Internal Revenue Service (http://www.irs.gov), then print out pages 50-51.

That should be enough to convince your employer that you should NOT be paying FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes.
