For as long as I can remember, my dream job has been something in the medical field. For about ten years I was set on becoming a veterinarian. That is still an option, but now I am becoming much more interested in the human body. I have a huge passion for science and math, and I am very interested in becoming some type of doctor or surgeon. However, music has also always been a huge part of my life. I have played the piano for more than 12 years. In addition to the piano, I spend about 50% of my time discovering new underground bands online. I am extremely passionate in genres such as alternative, punk/pop-punk, hardcore, techno, electronica, house, trance, chiptune, acoustic, indie, etc.. So my problem comes down to this: I can't decide what career to go into. I am currently a junior in high school, and I have to decide what college to attend and what to major & minor in. I can't possible imagine deciding between a career in the medical field and a career in the music industry. Any advice, or even any ideas of careers that could involve both aspect? I know it's a long shot, but I am desperate.

Try to find out what the day-to-day lifestyle of a musician and/or a physician/surgeon is. You'll find they're very different. The career you go into should not only reflect your interests, it must reflect what you want to do from day to day. For example, if you like music, but hate traveling from place to place; hate the low wages, etc. you probably won't like that field. On the other hand, if you like medicine, but hate the long hours and interaction with the public that is required of a physician, you probably won't like that field, either.

Hi,
Why can't you do both? I have a neighbor who's a doctor and plays the trumpet in the symphony one county over. I know doctors and lawyers who are musicians, photographers and painters. Everybody has interests outside of their vocation.

I found an article for you...

Good luck! :)

Hi, _undecided!

I have a friend who is a family physician during the day and a professional musician on some nights during the week. So, it is possible to find a balance between those two types of careers.

Thanks!
