I have around 8500.00 in credit card debt with 5 different cards.I recently became unemployed when I had to stay with my mom during her hospital stay and with her at home due to breast cancer,I am the only one to help her,the only child(she is hard of hearing as well). What can be done to me if I don't pay these 5 cards at all?I know coillections will be involved, but I have no money in the bank presently, and nothing in my name, which how could they take anyways(unsecured debt)?I also know my credit will be ruined and destroyed, but the courts can't get blood from a turnip.I called my creditors and all they could do was to lower my APR a bit,no other help and weren't too sympathetic to my situation, guess being bullying to me.Can anything be done to me if I have no money other than bad credit rating for several years? Please give me some peace of mind and hope.

Thank you,
Randy

Randy,

It is always easy to think you can just abandon your debt. The only person who cares is you anyway, right?? The only thing I can think of is, if your mom passes away and you get the house, will it become a target for collection?? --- Ace

Ace,
Thanks---I would never try to abandon debt for any reason, you can't reason with the creditors about lowering payments, there is no easy solution, and I certainly don't want an easy way out,but it is ridiculous to let these people bully someone when they are down don't you think?

For just a moment lets swith roles, and role play.

Lets say that your friend borrowed money from you ( that is what you do when you use a credit card, you are borrowing money from them)
In return you promice to pay it back at a certain interest rate over a certain time frame. ( you do that by agreeing to the card)

So this person you knows borrows money from you, you can use that money to pay for bills, to pay your taxes and so on, but your friend does not pay the money. Do you believe they should pay you back, or should you merely allow them not to pay?

No they can't get anything, they can get a judgement, so if you receive any money, or get your name on a bank account they can go after that.

Thank you Chuck, you give great advice,as I see all over these forums, credit and money situations can be difficult to sort through, and like me, an honest and decent person that has always paid on time, and then suddenly the unthinkable happens, not only to me,but a family member-well you think family first, payback later, simple as that. It's important to pay if you can and you should,I agree-credit card companies are ruthless in pursuit, they don't care about any sickness you or anyone has, they are mean spirited, callous and unfriendly, relentless as they are taught to be on their job to get their money any way they can.Again, thanks Chuck, nice to hear hope before bedtime ;-)

Take care,
Randy
