I have a house built in 1969 with a half bath in the basement. The sink is directly in front of the toilet and the sink drains down into a 2" pipe in the wall which I am assuming then travels into the toilet plumbing. My plan is to build a shower stall on an 8" pedestal and then use a P trap from the drain of the shower then tie it into the existing drain pipe for the sink.

I have never posted before and I am hoping that someone can tell me if they think this will work or not. Don't be afraid to tell me I'm crazy. Also, if this will work, I need to know what I will need to support the shower. Will I have to mount a small concrete base on top of my pedestal?

Hi Jokn,

How high off the floor is the pipe the sink drains into. Is it vertical or horizontal? "Drained down" tells me that you may have a "S" trap. The sink is trapped isn't it? Is the sink vented at all? Let us know, Tom

I'm not at the house now, but I believe that the sink is trapped in the cabinet. The drain pipe that it flows into is vertical.

The point where the sink drain meets the vertical drain in the wall is maybe 18" from the ground. This is why I'm assuming that I could use a trap on the shower a little bit lower without any problem.

If it will help, I can snap a picture of the system tonight and email it.

I just looked at the sink drain and there is a small horizontal tube coming off the top of the trap. What does this do?

Will this prevent me from installing the shower? I'm afraid that this vent is for allowing the water to drain.
