Can we cut off the 220v plug and connect a 110v plug and not harm the appliance? Or is there a plug converter available?

NO. It's not that simple. What device are you replacing? What is the amperage required by the old device?

It is a new device. A "light box" that we got for work. I am a color analyst and we inspect and approve garment colors. The box came with a 220v plug and requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit. The maintenance man suggested we just cut off the plug and wire in a 110v. I was worried that 1) that will violate the warranty and 2) possibly harm the new light box. I am hoping they decide to bring in the correct circuit and outlet.

Probably not, since the unit is rated 220 volts (if located in the USA, then it is 208 or 240 volt rated) and 120 volt will not harm it, it just won't operate properly.

Ask the maintenance man to stay with maintaining, even that is a scary thought, since he is responsible for maintaining who knows what and how has he been doing so far with electrical devices.

Either have the proper circuit and outlet installed, or purchase a 120 volt rated unit.
