Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator/Freezer

My freezer compartment is icing up (thinking: too cold, so defrost interval can't defrost enough during cycle... result: frost and ice build-up).

I tried to adjust the freezer temp lower (higher temp), but the slide control only adjusts two clicks... anything more and it just springs back to the 2nd position. Its as if the slide is starting at the second lowest temp setting, and can't go higher because the slide isn't properly aligned with the slot.

I THINK the slide control is just out of whack (need replacement or adjustment... maybe out of position), but I don't want to remove the cover to check it if doeing so opens Pandora's box.

Any advice? (I've tried manual defrost... that's a bandaid fix that lasts a day or so).

Also getting ice at the flow through to the fridge portion and in between (I assume that this is related to the freezer being too cold).

FYI: I think I'm talking about part 30 on the following diagram: KENMORE | Model #10656926600 | SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR | CONTROL PARTS | SearsPartsDirect.com (http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=10656926600&productCategoryId=0165000&brandId=0582&modelName=SIDE-BY-SIDE-REFRIGERATOR&diagramPageId=00009&componentDescription=CONTROL%20PARTS&documentId=K0603002&blt=06)
