How do I replace a heater core in 1996 Ford Ranger 3.0L

You have to remove the instrument panel and then the A/C evaporator case. You will have to discharge the A/C before removing the case. This is a HUGE job and you should invest in either alldata, eautrorepair, or a 1 week subscription to a genuine Ford manual. Labor time on this at a shop is 8 hours.

You need professional diagrams and explicit instructions (that means no Haynes or Chilton manuals). Skip that step and you will rue the day you ever took this job on yourself.

With the right manuals and a full weekend set aside, you can easily save yourself the $800 in labor. The core is less than $50.

Also, keep in mind that heater cores don't just rot out on their own. It's almost always caused by not changing the coolant on time.
