Why is my 2 year old black lab losing her hair on her back legs ( thighs) some tummy and armpits yet her same litter sister that is yellow lab is not? Is there something wrong with her? Thanks malillie

Is she scratching a lot? Could be allergies to her dog food, have you tried switching brands?

No we have always fed them Nutro lamb & rice but after reading so much on this website I'm not sure if this is right for them. She has always had a beautiful black shinning coat. She did have a skin problem in late summer that she lost hair on her neck and had open sore but was treated by the vet with pills and ointment and it cleared right up.

I was told once that dogs can develop allergies just like humans can, my take on dog food is if your dog likes it then keep giving it to them... Most generic brands og dog food have 100% of their daily nutrients. There was a thread I started asking other peoples ideas on dog food. I think I creativly entitled it "dog food". Has a vet seen her hair loss? Did she start losing the hair right after taking the medication that the vet had prescribed? OR was it before? Do you know how she got the open sore in the first place?

My niece has her mother and say's she does this once a year she is black also. Yet I do have her same litter yellow sister without this problem fed the same etc. They have just had their first experience with fleas from a camping trip but have been bathed and treated with frontline a week later

It was a skin problem but all hair grew back after treatment . We just noticed this new hair loss and it is not limited to one area.

Ohh definitely fleas can do this! She may have a sever allergic reaction to fleas. You may want totry a different flea medication, try advantage or maybe revolution. It doesn't make a difference what colour they are, and all dogs are different, just like humans, your sister may be allergic to peanuts but you aren't. Well I guess I'll have to see if this works, like I said this is our first time with fleas and we never had to treat them before. Just bathed them with flea shampoo when we felt they were smelling like dogs.They are indoor dogs that have a dogie door to let them out as they please but almost always in the home with free run of it .I asked my vet why they didn't have fleas and he said we were just clean people that took good care of our home and dogs. That week long camping trip did us in. They play quite active with each other. Until there daily walk and run. My husband is a vacuum freak and vacuums sometimes twice daily. I teas him he doesn't' need a Harley he's got his vacuum . Thanks so much!

I also am going to look into Cushing's disease that I read from another answer to a problem similar I have never heard of it.

There are a lot of things that can cause hair loss, Thyroid problems is another one but they do usually have weight gain as well as the hair loss.

A flea allergy will definitely do it too like Aurora said, I have spent the last few MONTHS trying to get them out of my house and I think I have only just succeeded.

Flea baths are worthless, go for a spot on treatment, those are the ones you put on the back of the dogs neck they then spread over their whole body via the oils on their skin and last for a month.
