Hello,

I am in the process of redoing a 200 sq. ft. space behind my detached garage. The room is approximately 40 ft. from the main house. All the walls are down to studs. The idea is for the room to be a bedroom / bathroom for house guests to stay in -- meaning it will get occasional use (no more than once a month). I will have easy access to electric, a gas line is possible, but would be a pain, and I will have access to hot water via the bathroom plumbing.

I am near Sacramento, CA and therefore our summers get hot (a couple of weeks usually close to 110 degrees for highs), coldest average lows are typically low 40s.

I am wondering what my options are for heating and air. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking about a standard wall unit for air and am not sure what is out there for heat. I am trying to keep the equipment cost down as this room will be used so infrequently. Thanks for the help.

Check out the Mr. Slim ductless split heat pump systems at mrslim.com. They are very quiet, perform well, and can be installed just about anywhere.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll check them out.

Another option might be a PTAC unit (commonly used in hotels). The ductless split would be a better choice if your budget allows.

I checked out both the PTAC and ductless split units, they looked good, although I was hoping to spend a little less than that.

I am kidding myself into thinking something like this would be an option?
