Hello everyone,

Let me first start by saying that I did have a tech in the summer this year and look @ my system. He found that the compressor to my unit was not coming on. After he did all of his checks he told me that the compressor was bad... but that he could try to jump the compressor (for 300 dollars) or of course buy a new unit. Of course not knowing anything
About AC and not having the money for a new 2000 plus unit I paid the 300 dollars and got through the summer. Now however the same thing has occurred. Everything is working inside and out but no cold air.

My question I guess is can this jumper that was installed fail to the point that a new compressor or unit will be needed or can I get another jumper for it?

Also by reading some posts it seems that a capacitor might be the real problem from the start
And this could this be my real culprit?

Any help in this matter would be of great help I am sure thanks in advance.

Mark

I have no idea how you would jumper a A/C unit to start with. What does it say on your invoice for services rendered. Since I never heard the term jumper the A/C unit I am curious.

I looked for the invoice before I did the starting post but couldn't find it. I am going strictly by what I recall the conversation to be.

But I do recall him using the words jumper. And it was for the outside compressor only.

Oh yeah I also recall that he told me that the compressor was dead but when I walked up on him while he had the meter to it I saw a draw and asked how that could be then, that's when he told me he could try to use a jumper, but that it might last a year with out failing or it might last 2 months.

Ok I found the ticket he put on there his words,
I found the compressor not starting added a hard start to it, and the compressor started.

If he already did the hard start thing then the compressor is now probably toast. Time for a new unit. Sorry but that is the way it is.

Ok so let me ask this can I get just the a compressor to replace the old one or does this really require a whole new unit?

Oh yes you also said:

Does that mean that there are things that I can do myself before looking at a new unit or new compressor?

There is nothing you can do to fix the situation unless you are skilled in the HVAC trade. If you want to just buy a compressor then do so but you will be sorry. A new unit has at lease 5 year parts warranty and possibly more. A replacement compressor only has from 90 day to one year depending upon who does the install.

The hard start kit is usually installed on a system that usually works without one when the compressor is starting to lock up or draw high current on the start up. This is usually when the compressor is on its last leg as you have found out.

In today's world you replace both the outside unit and the indoor coil at a minimal or you are asking for more problems if you do not replace the indoor coil. Good luck with your decissions.

I always tell it like it is. This way no one is lying to you to just to make you feel better for a short time until you find out the truth. I like to live my life like that.
