We just received Notice today that my husbands wages will be garnished due to back state taxes from owed to another state. We barely make it from paycheck - paycheck. I am unemployed due to a lay off, we have a daughter in college we support. We have really no money to speak of other han both receiving small retirement pensions. What if any can we do to fight this? Thanks!

Sorry, but not a thing. He owes the taxes and they have the right to collect. I doubt if the tax bill would be dischargeable in bankruptcy.

What percent are they going to take, but basically yes they can do this, and no they don't care if you have it hard or not.
Sadly this would have been avoided by working with the other state and setting up a payment plan, but now it is for too late for that.
You need to check the rules for garnishment of your state, they may have some exemptions so they can not take the max but that will be according to your state rules.
But yes they will be taking money to pay this
