Excactly what std's does this medication cure with a single 1 gram dose
What STDs? Hmmm a 1 gram single dose is usually prescribed for Cervicitis, chlamydia, chancroid, nongococcal urethritis.
So my guess is that it was prescribed for chlamydia.
It should not be taken if you are allergic to any of the meds that end in "mycin" like erythromycin, etc.

Well yes it was. But, the questions come from the research I did.
It's said the medicine is used to treat std's but doesn't specify any other than chlamydia.
Also its said that chlamydia and ghonneria usually go hand and hand. So I was wondering does this medicine cure both??
The treatment for gonococcal infections of this drug are still being investigated. Typically gonorrhea was treated by the penicillin drugs, but has become rather resistant.
There are many antiinfectives that are being used to treat gonorrhea now. Azithromycin is still being reserched. Actually it is still being researched for chlamydia also, but the correct dosage has been identified, where the exact dosage for gonorrhea is still being studied.

With the one dose how long will it take to cure?? And is a follow up test necessary?
Also I didn't see any precautions about alcohol
There are no contraindications to alcohol, that I could find in my drug books, but I am still a nursing student and your pharmacist would have more up-to-date info than I have. But alcohol should always be avoided in conjunction with any drug therapy.
Hw long will it take to cure? This is something you can call your pharmacist about. However, I believe it is about 7 - 10 days before you are no longer contagious.
Is a follow up necessary? Yes, a follow up is necessary any time there is an infection. You need to make sure that the antiinfective killed all suspicious bacteria.
