Hi,

I have a Moen bathtub spout that I want to remove/replace. I believe it is about 5 years old. I am not sure how to remove it. The spout has a small slot underneath, near its base. Am I right to assume it is a "slip on" type and I need to use an Allen wrench to remove it? I haven't managed to see up the slot using a small mirror. I've tried to feel around the slot for a screw head with an Allen wrench but no luck. Not sure what to do.

It is a slip on and you need to try several sizes of wrenches until you get the right one. That or buy your new one and see what size it requires, might be the same. Do not try to twist this spout off, you will scratch the pipe and the next one will not seal

Thank you for the quick response. Just wondering at what angle the Allen wrench is used. I assume the screw head be facing down.

Yes head is facing straight down so position the allen wrench staright upward

Threaded spouts don't have the little cut out hole on the bottom. If your spout has such a hole you have a slip on spout. Good luck, Tom

Hi guys thanks for the speedy help.
I've e-mailed Moen about the spout but they are little slow to response. That picture has a slot screw and is offset a bit, I thought that spouts used Allen/hex screws.
I'll post again when Moen gets back to me.

Bob what you have posted is a metal spout with threads. Threaded spouts don't have a small opening. They don't need one. Regards, Tom

Follow up
Moen finally got back to me and its seems that both slip-on and threaded-on spouts may have cut outs.

This is a quote from their reply:

"Both spouts have a cut out at the back this cut out is used to release any water that shouts back into the spout so it can drain. If you have a slip fit spout you will feel the screw in front of this cut out."

So since I feel no screw, I guess I have a threaded-on spout!

I have seen other spouts that have the slot and are not slip on spouts.

It it turns out to be a screw on screwed on to copper pipe and a 5/8's male adapter I know a way that you can get it off without twisting the copper pipe, so if this is what you have let me know.

I learn something new every day. In the past threaded spouts didn't have a "weep hole". There should have been no water to leak out if the spout were installed correctly. And Letmetellu, it's a 1/2" threaded adapter not 5/8ths. Regards, Tom
