Cjack, sorry to hear of your loss. You should start you own post by clicking on ASK. Your issue is just loosely related to SS.

You posted your question as a answer to someone else who wanted to know about retirement age, you would never get an answer that way, please review how to use our site,

I have moved your question

If your wife had a work history and hence SS credits built up, I believe that you can indeed receive benefits once you reach retirement age. Here's a link that may help explain it:

Survivors Benefits (http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10084.html)

Usually it's the SS of the larger of the two.

Pensions depend on the plan. Some have survivors benefits, other plans do not.

Also you have to meet the SS's requirement of just how many years you were married. That has a LOT to do with if you can collect the larger of the two retirement benefits.
