Does the crown have to be removed before they do the root canal what is procedure

Yep, the crown must be destructively removed. Just had a crown removed recently and replaced because of decay.
It has to be "peeled away".

No, the crown does not have to be removed before a root canal is done. It is VERY common for the dentist to make a hole in the top of the crown, do the root canal and then put a filling in the hole. If there is a significant amount of decay under the crown, then YES you'd need to have the crown cut off, root canal done, new core built and then a crown placed.
