I have a casual friend who is going on a trip from the U.S.to Bangladesh to see his family. What would be an appropriate gift to a muslim from a non-muslim in this circumstance? He will be returning after 3- months. I don't want to give him something that will make him feel obligated to give me something in return, just want him to know his friends are thinking of him and want him to have a safe journey and return. Was considering something like a small prayer book . Please advise.
Thanks, Ken

Ken,
That is sweet of you to think of giving a gift to your friend.
Did you mean a muslim prayer book? If it is by muslims for muslims it would be an appropriate gift.
If not, something for the family or if there are kids in his family maybe something like a book, sweets or a toy for the kids might be appreciated.
When giving gifts to muslims, remember that pork products and any religious affiliated figurines or dolls or books, such items are not a good idea.
Otherwise most other gifts are appropriate.
And you can expect some gift in return, if I know Bangladeshi's they will probably bring something local for you in return.

Dear Firmbeliever,
Thanks for your answer . I was going to try and find a Muslim prayer book. Nothing expensive, we all are just getting by in this economy.
Sincerely, Ken
