View Full Version : Guy has 3 cats: weird or not?

So... there's this guy.
He has 3 cats.
I find it a little weird. Is it just me?
Guys are supposed to have dogs, sometimes reptiles, but three cats?
Whoa.
Is it my problem or does this guy have a problem?
And yes, he talks about his 3 cats a lot. He gets really defensive if I giggle or make stunned faces when he starts talking about them like people and tells me how much he misses them.
Ha. I just want your opinion.
Am I being a jerk? Or is 3 cats 1 guy just... weird?

I don't think its weird..
Men are strange creatures,I don't understand them, but cats, cats are not strange.
And a man with cats, one balances out the other!

Cats are low maintenance pets and many busy people find them great companions who don't need a lot of attention.
Maybe he grew up with cats so he finds comfort from that.
I don't think I would count out a nice guy because he has cats.
If he dressed them up in silly outfits, then I might think twice. :)

If it was one cat I wouldn't mind, but three? For some reason it raises a little flag.
Maybe it's just my preconceived notions of men and how they should be...
Hmm.

There's nothing strange about it at all! I know quite a lot of men that prefer cats, even my own husband!
I'm not sure if it's a generation thing because I will admit that I have not meant an older man (50+) that saw cats as anything more then mousers or pests. Usually they also think that a good dog belongs in the yard and not in the house.
Maybe its because we are in a more pet friendly era where everything doesn't need to have a purpose to own.

I'm married to a cat lover. We have three and may be rescuing and adopting two feral kittens that we have been feeding. My two son have cats (and abhor dogs). Each has its own personality and idiosyncrasies. Each completes the household without being demanding (except when it's time to eat). All offer affection without smothering. And being constantly "in your face." None have to be taken for walks, and all were potty trained by their mothers long before we rescued them from the mean streets. All are fastidious to a fault. Cats can be (and my younger son's has been) left alone for as much as two days with proper preparation and managed just fine.
What's not to like about cats?

I have a cat. I don't mind them.
I know they are easy to handle, it's part of the reason I got one.
If it were one, heck I wouldn't be asking--- but three. Really, that is just one too many for me.

Hello Sarah:
There isn't a manlier man than me, and I have a cat. I know, I SHOULD like Budweiser, but I prefer a good cabernet sauvignon. I SHOULD drive a pick up, but I have a Volvo. I SHOULD smoke Marlboro's, but I smoke other leafy green substances.
So, you're not being a jerk, really. You just need to expand your horizons..

I guess it may also have to do with how the guys are raised.
If the guy is raised in a slightly more macho environment then they may be taught from an early age that dogs are manly pets and sissy cats are for girls.
You would need to take a look on how the older generation of men in those guys lives view cats, once again going back to the older generation thing. If their daddy and other influential older men viewed cats as pests or girly pets then it is very likely that that is how they will learn to view them.

Yup, that's probably true. It works the other way too. My husband's parents hated cats, so, when their kids were small, got a dog ("Savage") who rolled around in disgusting things outside, who peed when excited, who had to be taken for walks, who, when indoors, was like a bull in a china shop, who slobbered on whoever was petting him. No wonder my husband loves cats.

Another point to consider is this Sarah, the guy must have a good sense of his masculinity if he feels cool about being a cat person. He is confident enough to step out of the stereotype and do his own thing.
He is embracing his feminine side and there is nothing wrong with that... :)

Sooooo...
I tried to broaden my horizons... and this is how it went.
I tried saying sorry. It went like this:
Ring Ring Ring
Guy: Hello?
Me: Hi, it's me. I just wanted to say sorry for being such a jerk.
Guy: Oh yea... about what?
Me:... your cats..
Guy: Meh it's all right, I love my cats.
A scoff and a giggle comes out
Me: sorry. I'm just not used to it.
Guy: You know you are a jerk. I'll call you some other time.
Me: Whatever- go have sex with your cats freak show.

Define weird.
The way I see it, we're all a little weird - but most of us keep it inside. (Weird is in the eye of the beholder also.) However, with some of us the 'weird' is a little more obvious.. it's on the outside.
A guy with three cats doesn't raise an eyebrow for me - my husband had 2 canaries when I met him. Is that weird? I didn't think it was, but someone might.
Perhaps it's about not making judgements... it's all part of the rich tapesty of life!

Why three cats, is it a menage a trois or is one of the cats missing out:D
Honestly I feel I have to stick up for this poor chap, yep when he chooses the cats over a lady, that's definitely out in the fields somewhere
However,
When you wake up in the morning, the cat is always pleased to see you
When you feed a cat, they are always grateful regardless if how it looks or smells
You can entertain a cat with nothing more than a rolled up newspaper
Cats will never be angry with when you have had one too many beers
A cat will whole heartedly join in with the spreading the takeaway food around the living room when your drunk
A cat will tell you politely with soft taps it is time to wake up, instead of using elbows
A cat will entertain you while on the toilet and will never complain about the odour
You can get a worthless peice of string and the cat will love it like diamonds
A cat will let you watch all the sport you like withiout complaint
Just a thought

If someone was a jerk about my cats (I had 3 until recently), I'd sure as HELL choose my cats over a "possible" relationship with that person.
I don't think the guy is weird at all. My best friend is a guy with 2 cats, but he'd have more cats if he had a bigger place. Cats are great pets :)
PS--any guy that has a dog over a cat (or 3) because it's "manlier" probably doesn't have any idea what the difference between a manly man and a macho man---and why women choose the manly one over him EVERY time.

Cripes.
I don't mind a man who has a cat... however 3 is a little too much for me. The way he talked to them. Talked about them. Just really creeped me out.
Maybe because I'm used to jerks and a-holes. Who knows. However, I have a cat of my own 3+1=4 and that would be too
many litter box changes and hair all over the place for me.
Anywhozzils we're talking again. We both came to the understanding that his weird relationship with his cats is too much for me [really he's put tuna in his mouth and fed his cats... ISN'T THAT WEIRD? ]. Like I said we made up. We're just friends.
Eek. Some of you make me sound like a total b!tch, but hell at least I don't bullsh!t the truth. A man with three cats in a small apartment is weird. A man with a dog- heck that I like... unless it's a Shih Tzu... or a Poodle.. or a Chihuahua... just any small dogs [I myself dislike small dogs.. especially pugs].

When I met my late husband I had three big dogs, over 100# pounds each. I didn't treat them like children and they didn't eat of my mouth (eeek!) BUT if they didn't like someone I was dating, I didn't see that person again.
Maybe that's strange. Maybe not. That's how it was.

I had a poodle growing up and two cats.
Every guy I brought over was hated by the poodle. He'd growl or steer clear. The cats would hide.
When I brought hubby over for the first time he accidentally stepped on the poodles paw. Silver (the poodle) yiped but stayed put. R (hubby) picked him up, cuddled him, he was so upset that he'd stepped on Silvers paw. Silver stayed by R's side the entire time he was there. The cats both came to get petted, they never did that with anyone. I knew he was a keeper.
We have 3 dogs and 4 rabbits, a bird and fish. Some people consider us strange because we have a small zoo. Here's the thing. I love animals, so does hubby. There are so many animals out there and not enough homes. I can provide a home, love, a safe environment, so why shouldn't I? We never take on more then we can handle.
I'd have cats, if I could, but, even though everyone in my house loves cats, 3 out of 4 people are very allergic. :(

Animals and kids just pick up on things..
Long time ago I was friends with a guy,I was out with my youngest and ran into him, afterwards she said she did not like him, when he did ask me out I said no,just because she said she did not like him!
She said he 'looked' at her, what ever that means to a four year old.

It's true Red.
My dogs love everyone except this one guy that my husband works with. Whenever he comes Chewy and Indy stay clear, Jasper just sits by him and growls.
I don't like the guy, never have, there's just something about him that bugs me but I can't put my finger on it. He's annoying, but that isn't the only thing I don't like.
My daughter won't even say hi to him. I asked her why the last time he came over, she said "he reminds me of a bad guy in a movie, you know the one that everyone thinks is okay but then he steals your teddy bear and you never see it again". What can I say, she's 7. ;)

Hey men can love cats just as much as dogs. Cats are less maintenance than most women. Dogs are high maintenance like a lot of women I have met. I have had both types of pets and women, and frankly prefer less maintenance and drama that a cat provides.
You are being way to uptight about a pet. Perhaps you should try going to an animal shelter and surround yourself with dogs and cats and see which one you prefer.

I wrote it with a bit of humor intended, but obviously the shoe fit differently than I intended. It is a pet, some people don't like any pets. I'm dating a girl now that doesn't like my cats, and basically told me that when the cats are gone she would consider moving in but she doesn't want to live with cats and a cat box. I agree they can be smelly and shed on her clothes. But I'm not ready to dump my cats, they are getting older, and I've had them for 12 years.

And as for this guy - absolutely NO. You are way out of his league to put it mildly. Plus I don't think you're all that interested in listening to every little nuance of his cats. I'm not a cat person. I'm strictly a dog person. Any cats I've owned were outside cats - not inside cats as I can't stand litter boxes! Yuck. I can only imagine what this guy's house stinks like.

My opinions, for what they are worth:
A man having cats is not weird.
Anyone having three cats is not weird, or at least no more weird than having three dogs, especially like three great danes. I just look at that and think--so much kibble!
Anyone who feeds their pets (dog or cat) from their mouth is definitely weird.
Anyone who talks obsessively about their pets (or children) gets annoying after a while if you aren't into that subject. My sister has three cats and I only ask her about them when I'm trying to make her feel good. And I have two cats myself. I hardly ever talk about them except to brag, because I have taught them to shake hands, like dogs.
About snakes, I dated a guy who kept rattlesnakes. At first I thought it was cool, but then I decided he was truly weird. Lots of people have one boa or something like that and are not weird. I love snakes. But having 5 rattlesnakes in your bedroom is weird. Sorry. There's my line.
Lastly, I am so tired of hearing about "high maintenance" women. Sheesh. When my ex moved out, my workload went down by a third. I didn't have to cook a separate meal for him every night, wash and fold his laundry, help him find his wallet or briefcase several times a week, and, lastly, listen to him complain about work all the time (we are talking ~8 hours a week of complaining). I can't imagine any woman being as high maintanence as that.
Edit: Lastly, lastly, I had boyfriend in college who told me he would never marry me because he didn't think I would pick up his socks. He never asked me; he just said this. I was of course desperately in love and would have picked up his socks. I didn't see him for 20 years and then we got back in touch. He'd had four kids by three women, all of whom had left him. He lives alone now and picks up his own socks.
