I have an external h d can I install a second operating system on it to try it out to see if I like it or not and be able to keep vista on my lap top at the same time?

Yes, you can. You will have to set the boot sequence to boot from the USB hard drive though.
I did it so I could try out Windows 7

Most Linux distributions have a bootable CD (also known as a Live CD) that you can run that does not alter your PC in any way.
