I have a 95 honda civic ex. When we got the car we were told the ignition was bad and we found out for ourselves when we tried to start it. Every time we start it, the car starts but when it kicks back to the run position, the car shuts off. I did some research online and was reassured by many people that replacing the ignition switch would take care of it. We replaced but the same thing keeps happening. We don't know what else it could possibly be. Anyone have a clue please let me know. I'm at my wits end with a car I can't drive and 3 small kids walking everywhere.

Interesting situation. I would have agreed with the prior diagnoses that replacing the ignition switch would have solved the problem. If a new switch has been properly installed, then the problem must reside elsewhere in the ignition system. I'm inclined to suggest:

. Ensuring the Check Engine Light comes on and goes off after 2 seconds, when the ignition switch is turned to ON (Position II), that you can hear the fuel pump run during this interval, and that you can hear the main relay click on and off.

. Cleaning the main ECM ground, located on the thermostat housing with abrasive cloth. Look for a three-wire brass connector.

. Testing all under dash and under hood fuses with a test light or multimeter:

Be very thorough, since it will save a lot of time and money.

. Replacing the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil, if the problem persists:
