Hi there, I have custody of my 11 year old niece. I have had it since 2002. My sister is a drug addict and very sick mentally. I want to adopt my niece to give her security. My sister would object. Do I have any legal right?

If your sister would object, you have a VERY tough road to travel. First you would have to have her found unfit. This is harder than it sounds. Second, you would have to get the father's permission or have him also found unfit.

You should seek a local lawyer to assess all of what you will have to accomplish to make this happen.

I would not bet on it though.
