View Full Version : Full Moon Madness or Lunacy. Do You Think Such a Thing Really Exists?

Hi, All!
I do. I'm wondering what others think? I always feel a little bit weird around the time of a full moon. Just not quite as "in-sync" as I might be...
Any others, too? Or, not? Perhaps some people might be more susceptible to it than others?
What about policeman who might be witness to the way that people are at certain times of the month, or healthcare professionals?
All opinions are welcome. It is, after all, a matter of opinion. Perhaps logical opinions and expressions about the way people feel and think about it might be helpful and beneficial to others?
This thread, will no doubt, get excellent exposure on the Internet when people search for the subject!
Thanks!

Hi Clough!
Yes the full moon does seem to affect me-yesterday's made me go all sentimental and a bit weepy!
It would be interesting to find out if guards in prisons notice any changes in the inmates ?

Yes, finding out about how people who work or have worked in prisons could potentially be an excellent perspective on something like this!

Hi again-havent found anything conclusive but will keep my eyes open!
Clough, we schedule extra nurses during the full moon. We always get a TON of patients. Either laboring patients (mostly), or outpatients who think they are in labor.
Our ER schedules extra security on the nights of the full moon as well.

Oddly the night of the full moon makes me feel pretty calm and whatnot
However on the few days running up to the full moon and for like two days after I usually get pretty odd especially if I have consumed any alcohol O_o

Back in the early 60's I lived and worked in South Beach, ( this is before it went "upscale".) I had a favorite bar on Collins I would hang out at.
On the night of a full moon the crazies would come out of the woodwork.
Trust me! A full moon will affect you and it hits the mentally unstable first and the hardest. I was there and saw it in action. Cheers, tom

I personally never feel different when there's a full moon. I usually don't even realize it's a full moon unless a particular co-worker of mine is around to point it out. It never fails though, ever time I complain how weird customers are being, it's pretty much always on nights with full moons.

I am no scientist but every time there is a full moon my clients ask me the dumbest questions. Or they do the most mind boggling things to their fuel pumps. I don't get it. One time a guy called me and said I couldn't find the key to open the front panel so I used a crowbar to open it. A crowbar really!! Without fail I look at the calender and it says a full moon for that night.

Hi, justcurious55!
I wonder why it is that you don't feel anything? I do...
I wonder if it might have to do with the physical characteristics of the person, or is this something that has only to do with the mind..

I've heard told that a full moon can bring about many different sorts of happenings.
Sometimes thing come out in the open, secrets get revealed, people tend to be more emotional or calm (I'm more calm)
Some feel peaceful while others feel anxious. I think it has a different effect from person to person.
I think it tips the balances in peoples lives. I don'tthink necessarily for the worse, but it helps things change is what I believe.
Maybe a monthly emotional cleansing time, as well as many other factors.
It also brings out the werewolves!

If you wanted to hunt at night then a full moon would be the desreable nights to do this on
There are a few threads here that people say are restless on these nights, and I am wondering if it is because we should be out and about stalking some noctornal animal

Body water - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_water)
What percentage of the average human brain is water? (http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question16869.html)
Since much of the human body is water. And the moon has the largest gravitational 'pull' on the earth, I can see where this might have an affect on us since about 78% of our brain is water. Hence the moon's 'pull' could easily affect moods, actions, thinking processes and thus our actions.
After all, The moon has enough affect on our oceans and seas to create tides.

I learned in My psychology class that humans aren't Natrually supposed to just sleep at night, but rather when we're tired. But we've made it so that we're awake during the day (generally speaking) because that's when everything is more visible. I always feel awake at night, unless I just haven't had sleep, and I've found that for me, It's easier for me to fall asleep during the day. Not sure why that is though.

Hello phsohappy
Nice comment
Maybe someone can inform us why there is such a thing as a night person and a morning person?
I was always lead to believe that night time (darkness) meant sleep time, a form of hibernation for the human body due to the lack of food around in the winter time
Or that just one of those old wives tales that life is full off?

I didn't see the entire show, but I remember one of my cousin's watching something on TV awhile back about how people used to sleep and something about there was some evidence that people would get up and work or hunt in the morning, sleep when it was hottest in the afternoon, get back up and work in the evening again for awhile, and then sleep again. Not just like a nap in the afternoon, but more like regular sleeping periods in the afternoon and evening. I think it was for a hunter-gatherer society. Has anyone else ever heard anything about it?
I feel like a "night person." no mtter how tired I am during the day, I usually wake up more at night. And no matter how early I try to go to bed, if I have to wake up early, it's like torture.

I'm curious, because a full moon only means that the earth is out of the way and the moon is in a direct path of the sun light.
So my question is, why would the moon being lit up fully by the sun have any different affect than usual?
If it was a matter of the moon being closer to the earth at different times then I could understand some gravitational effect.

Someone asked if anyone is in tune with the phase of the moon here. I am. I almost always know what phase the moon is in, approximately. Like tonight is a half moon, waxing.
I don't know if I feel weird or anything with the full moon--the moon is actually pretty integral to my religion. You start things in the new moon (or the dark moon) and have them "come to light" in the full moon. You shouldn't attempt to start something new in a waning moon--that's for self reflection.
So I think a lot of people just go back to some of their pagan roots with the moon phases, and the full moon is a time of fulfillment--so it's that "something is going to happen" feeling that most people get--doesn't matter whether the something is good or bad. I think people get jittery with it, personally, which causes the rise in crimes and in injuries.
Just Dahlia
Oct 26, 2009, 06:20 PM
The full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth than the sun, so we actually see the moon, from the reflection. The new moon (I believe) is when the sun is reflecting on the otherside and we just see black.
The moon is always full (we just can't see it) but the circumstances of the light seem to have an effect on some of us.
I'm sure it's all different, but with AMHD members, it could be more interesting:cool: or not:rolleyes::)

My so-called mother always said that I was born backwards because I was always a night person from the time I was born. Said she couldn't get me to sleep at night to save her life, but that I slept all day with no problem.
Most people and animals tend to have their waking cycles coincide with the daylight hours. This is how people and animals that tended to be nocturnal became thought of as evil: it was thought that they were hiding something wrong from God and the daylight.

My body blew up like a balloon, but could have been something I ate, even though I'm pretty sure I stayed away from sodium.
I had very strange dreams and they were all connected to each other, which rarely happens. Usually they are a bunch of different ones or I never remember the connection. Also could have been food.
I did hear a lot of sirens (police, ambulance) but nothing in the neighborhood.
We also had a time change on Sunday, so this Full Moon might not be a good starting point for me, I'll have to make comparisons on the next one and the New Moon to be sure.

Okay then, looked up at the sky
Saw the Full Moon
Wondered if it had any effect on me
The answer is no
I wondered again
Really thought this time
But sadly no, not a peak of madness in sight

It wasn't until I found myself naked that I thought there might be something in this:D
I'll put it this way...
No babies since last Thursday... Then BAM!!
4 delivered last night during the full moon! Good thing or I'd be called off work tonight.

I will have to say that some of the stuff that affliate its self with the full moon is true. You just have to do research and find out what is. I don't understand how we can celebrate Halloween, but the mention of the work witch craft, pegan, wiccan, or spells, everyone gets all defensive and say its eval. Did you know that it is believed that Jesus at one time practice the Pegan ways. I think if you are going to live in the world, today's society, the way life is now, you have to have an open mind.
I seriously believe that we should go back to the way it was because if they can make it so can we but the thing that would be different is how we all are equal. How we are respectful to every race. What would be like in the old days it light by an oil lamp, doing laundry would be out side in a tub and scrubbing them clean, working out in the yard, or having out to dinner event with your family. We are so lazy now that we became boring.
Except for those who do live an open mind life. They understand that A full moon does mean something but it doesn't mean its all evil. I think if you have a problem with the full moon maybe you should think back in your life and see if you can say five evil things that have happened to them on a full moon, you won't find someone who can. If you do then they just either are lying about it, or they just have real crappy luck.

I don't think anyone IS saying that the Full Moon is Evil. We are having fun and experimenting to see if anything is different for us.:)
We can't REALLY go back to the ways from before for many reasons, not that we wouldn't want to.

Hi!
Yep, full moons always affect me too, usually make me more emotional and weepy sometimes. Am very aware of it now and can recognise when the moon is waning.
Lunacy does come from Lunar and as a nurse, when I worked in a old peoples nursing home, the residents with dementia were always markedly more confused around the time of a full moon.
If you think about it, the moon rules the tides, we are mostly made up of water so it seems obvious that it will therefore affect us in some way.
Very interesting subject matter!

Interesting question,
I have never noticed any changes as per the moon phases, not that I have consciously observed myself or others at these times.
------------------------
Philosophy of Science Portal: Lunatics (http://philosophyofscienceportal.blogspot.com/2009/03/lunatics.html)
(Does a full moon really trigger strange behavior?by Scott O. Lilienfeld and Hal Arkowitz February 9th, 2009 Scientific American)
But there are at least three reasons why this explanation doesn't "hold water," pardon the pun. First, the gravitational effects of the moon are far too minuscule to generate any meaningful effects on brain activity, let alone behavior. As the late astronomer George Abell of the University of California, Los Angeles, noted, a mosquito sitting on our arm exerts a more powerful gravitational pull on us than the moon does. Yet to the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of a “mosquito lunacy effect.” Second, the moon's gravitational force affects only open bodies of water, such as oceans and lakes, but not contained sources of water, such as the human brain. Third, the gravitational effect of the moon is just as potent during new moons—when the moon is invisible to us—as it is during full moons.
----------------
From the same link
llusory correlations result in part from our mind's propensity to attend to—and recall—most events better than nonevents. When there is a full moon and something decidedly odd happens, we usually notice it, tell others about it and remember it. We do so because such co-occurrences fit with our preconceptions. Indeed, one study showed that psychiatric nurses who believed in the lunar effect wrote more notes about patients' peculiar behavior than did nurses who did not believe in this effect. In contrast, when there is a full moon and nothing odd happens, this nonevent quickly fades from our memory. As a result of our selective recall, we erroneously perceive an association between full moons and myriad bizarre events.

Hunting and Fishing Solunar (sun and moon phase) Calendar (http://www.kingsoutdoorworld.com/hunting-guide/deer_activity.htm)
edited to add this excerpt from the link
Research has shown that a natural day for fish and many other
animal species differ from our own. Their biological clock
appears to coincide with lunar time, which is the time that it
takes for the moon to reappear at a given point during one
complete rotation of the earth (an average of 24 hours and 53
minutes. This is called a Tidal Day and explains why the
ocean tides are about an hour later each day - and why most
fish, fresh water species included, will feed up to an hour later
(in relation to our solar clock) each day.

That scares me Clough, but thanks for the heads up!
I can attest to the fact that overt or prominent characteristics in people manifest during a full moon. But, more it is the night before the full moon in my opinion.
Abusers are angrier, PMS is worse, animals, both domestic and wild, are more 'tuned in', people are generally grumpier. Walk through a walmart at six p.m. on the eve of a full moon, and you'll see what I mean.
I personally think that we are affected by the tides, and gravity more.
What I don't understand is why it is never a good time psychologically for people. Always bad. For some at least.
I always dreaded going into work on a full moon day. When I"m not aware it's a full moon, and somebody points it out, I say, "AH HAH!" that explains the day.

I always know when it's a full moon, or near to it. My body and mind indicate that to me.
I can be wondering why I'm feeling kind of "out of sinq", and sure enough, most likely it's near to, or is the day of a full moon.

Which is also a blue moon--December 31st, I mean.
And as far as full moons always being a bad time psychologically for people--I don't understand that. In pagan religions, a full moon was the time of fulfillment, of the culmination of things previously begun--the fullness of the month, if you will.
It's also historically when things like moonlight hunts, and evening gatherings were planned before electricity made it easy to do things after the sun set.
I think that people are just reacting to having more LIGHT in their lives, honestly. People are more active in summer evenings than winter evenings, too, because the sun is out longer. I feel MORE invigorated with the full moon--and I think it's because it's "light" out longer.

I am always affected by the full-moon. But weirdly sometimes it is a positive affect and sometimes negative. I can get restless and grumpy but I can find it the best time to deal with things that I have to be particularly assertive about.
Also I know that psychiatric hospitals in this area always put on extra staff for the full-moon. (from friends who are staff if you're wondering lol).
Isn't there some evidence that women's menstual cycles are normally governed by the lunar cycle as well? (assuming no hormonal treatments etc are interfering).
I think there is indeed a lot of evidence that the moon affects human biology. Also some farmers plant and harvest their crops according to whether the moon is waxing and waning.
Don't know how it works its spell but it seems powerful magic...

Hi, Synnen!
I can't disagree with you for the positive sides of this sort of thing. Nor would I want to or feel the need to. I think that the having more light thing is great! However, some people, including myself, are negatively influenced by the power of the full moon. Some people don't seem to be influenced by it. But, I know that I am.

I too, am in need of a new bed... My beds are very saggy and one of them even has a hole in it where your elbow might go!

When I don't know that the full moon is approaching, I still can feel weird. When I check to see about the activity of the moon, it's invariable that it is a full moon when I'm feeling weird.
I'm sorry that there is something potentially bad happening where you are!
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you, too!
Thanks!

Its OK no one got killed today.
A month ago someone did in my parking lot and he is still free.I live in a bad area with very nice people who don't want it and who are not a part of it but a few destroy it for others!!
I hope you find a way to understand this.
Maybe it's a time when you need to look inside and go deep and find the missing link that is creating this emotion.
It is there for a reason, you just have to figure it out.
Peace!

... I see Zombies staggering up and down the street through my extended telescope, and they look really hungry... all the lights are out everywhere, and the coyotes and wolves are howling.
Bats are flying around and I hear no birds... windows are smashing, cars are starting by themselves, and the Zombies seem to be walking... up... my... driveway...
Got to go... back under the bed for me until the sun comes up...

Silly Jake. If the zombies are coming, you fill the bathtub with water, the gun with ammo, and you take out the stairs. Zombies can't climb.

Looks like I came upon this pretty late in the game, but I used to work the swing and graveyard shifts of a medical answering service. We could tell just by the phone calls we got what stage the moon was in! We received a MUCH higher percentage of calls to the OBs for women in labor (or delivering in their cars); lots of mentally ill patients calling for their doctors and therapists - many of them in full paranoia and hysterical; etc. Sometimes after about an hour of such calls we would send someone outside to check, and sure enough it would be a full moon. Harvest moons were especially powerful.

Auntie, you are so right.
The worst of human behaviour would show. More batterings, more emergency calls, more problems of all descriptions.
It sort of snuck up on you. The day would start normally, and by noon you wanted to stick needles in your eyes and jump off the nearest building. And then we would realize why- full moon.
I seem to have more energy a few days before a full moon, then after a full moon, I'm super tired, but that could be just me. I'm sure I'll sleep well now that the Zombies have moved out of the neighbourhood.
