Hi.

My 14 month old daughter is only 15lb. 7oz. (way below the chart! ) She was always a small baby (born with 5.1lb), and for a few months (between 8 and 11 months) she has not gained any weight at all. Now she resumed to gain weight a little bit, and she put on 4 oz. since her previous weight check a month ago.

She has hit every developmental milestone possible, she is walking very nicely, she is playing (she is even talking care of a doll and she walks her around in a toy stroller) and she is a very happy baby generally. She sleeps well (about 12 hours at night and another 1-1 1/2 hour nap during the day) - she does wake up in the middle of the night, but she usually fusses a little, maybe drink a bit of breast milk and she goes back to sleep.

She knows everything around the house and outside by name, she is talking a lot (she tries to imitate every single word she hears, and very often she gets it quite right). She says at least ten clear English words at this point, and I can actually see her vocabulary grow every day...

She is not eating huge ammounts of food, but she has definitely improved, and she is eating a well balanced diet at this point (I would say). She eats string cheese, frankfurters, meat, soup, pasta, tomatoes, cherrios, fruit juices, fruits, bread etc...

My wife and I are of the slim type, and I remember my parents struggled with my weight gain for many years, too. I am now 6'2" and only 140lb.

I would like to hear anybody's opinion on this... Should we freak out? We are already worried, but her doctor says everything is fine and as long as she is doing what is supposed to do, she is OK... I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and how they handled it.

Any ideas or comments are welcome. Thanks a lot in advance for all your feedback.

My daughter never had much baby fat and, just like yours, hit every developmental milestone as if on cue. She's 5 1/2 now and quite athletic and lots of energy and tall and skinny. If the doctor says its OK then go with that. You never know when a growth spurt may hit. Hey you're tall and skinny and your daughter seems to have healthy eating habits - all looks good!

I agree with NK. I would also like to add that you are lucky in that she is not obese. That is a much harder problem to deal with.

Remember genetics. If you were small there is a good chance she will be.

As long as she is eating healthy, and it looks like she is, and hitting her milestones, then there should not be any reason for concern. Just continue to follow your pediatrician's orders.

I don't think that you should worry. Some small kids just don't gain weight as quickly as others, but as long as she's eating good, and she' s healthy in all other ways, you shouldn't worry.
