You want a Social Security Number. That is the tax id for individuals. Contact any social security office.

You can get a ITIN from the IRS utilizing a form W-7. You will need to submitt with the application a certified /notarized copy of their passport or you need two items a birth certificate and photo id (unexpired) if under 14 the 2nd id can be a current docter's record or school record. You can take your children as dependants if they live in the US or are citizens of Mexico or Canada. It is a simple process except you need to submit the W-7 with YOUR tax return.

You may not apply for an ITIN if you are eligible for a SS number.

Since so little info was provided in the initial post it is impossible to determine if the kids are eligible or not.

File Form W-7 with IRS.

Pavan:

Based on your orignal posting, you need to submit Form W-7 with your 2009 tax return to get ITINs for your wife and children.

Do not submit the Form W-7 by itself, as it will be rejected by the IRS unless you need the ITIN for your wife and children to attend school or for your wife to open a bank or brokerage account.
