I am a non resident alien on an F1 visa for three years now. I file taxes as an independent since my wife and other two kids are on F2 visa.
Now I had a baby girl in the states on August 29. I knew that I still have to file as a non resident alien and cannot claim her as a dependent. I also knew that I can have a child tax credit for her despite my status.
Now my question is:
What does a child tax credit mean? Is it a $1000 that I get as a refund?
How can I claim this tax credit?
Thanks

First, please identify your home country so good guidance may be given.

In order to claim the $1,000 Child Tax Credit (which would result in a $1,000 being added to your refund), you would need to attach Form 8901 to your Form 1040NR. Form 8901 documents your child's name and Social Security Number for the IRS to verify her citizenship status.
