I hold two jobs. One being a full time job Mon-Fri 9-5, the other working at the local restaurant on Sat and Sun.

Out of the blue my boss came to me two weeks ago and asked how much I bring home from the weekend job in tips. I gave him an average and he said he would raise me the average plus $100, starting this pay period, as long I as promised to put in my two week notice to them. I agreed and never received the raise.

Because I know his track record of making promises and not keeping them I never did give my two week notice.

How do I approach him on the subject that he promised but never delivered?

Thanks!

The first thing I would have done is ask for the raise in writing. I don't think its unreasonable to get a guarantee if you are giving up something.

Now the offer was contingent on you taking some action (giving notice) which you didn't do. Since you didn't uphold your end of the deal, why do you expect him to uphold his?

I understand it was contingent on me giving my two week, but I knew that he would never give the approval for the raise in the first place. He talks a lot and sells a lot and when it is time to deliver he doesn't. Had I given my two week at the other place I would have been SOL.

I promise you he doesn't know if I gave it or not because he hasn't asked and I promise you that it is not because I did not give my notice yet.

I wouldn't be too sure. He obviously knows about the job, so he may have talked to your other boss.

But the bottomline is you need to get the offer in writing.
