When are you most fertile to get pregnant? Some people have told me that it is a week before your period and some have said after, I was just wondering if anyone knew.

It all depends on your ovulatory cycle. You see, once we release an egg, it is only viable for fertilization for 24 hours. It's a miracle anyone every get's pregnant.

Okay, so how do you know when your ovulatory cycle begins and ends and when an egg drops?

Most women don't. It's the luck of the draw. Firstly, you have to know your cycles. Are they 28 day, 32 day, etc?

You are very welcome.
I'll give you an example okay...
If you are very regular, we will say your period starts October 1. Then you would most likely conceive on October 15.
Now, remember that it can take up to 5 days for the sperm to travel up the vaginal canal and through the uterus where it meets the egg in the fallopian tube.
This is why it is recommended to try to have intercourse several days before you expect to ovulate.

So this topic has ALWAYS thrown me for a loop, I just don't get it lol.
So how can you tell when your cycle starts. Is it the first day of your period or the last? So if "I " started on Oct 1st, and a "flow" usually lasts 5 days, then I would be ovulating for the remaining 10? Or 5? If you've had sex while you were ovulating we will say on 5th day after your period, and it takes up to 5 days for sperm to reach final destination, if you stopped ovulating with in those 5 days, would you still be able to ger pregnant?

For women who are on a regular 28 day cycle, you start counting from the 1st day of your period... and count 15 days.
That is your most fertile day--however, sperm stay alive inside a woman for up to 72 hours, so one could feasibly get pregnant on day 15 from sex they had on day 12 or 13! And the egg sits there for a while "waiting" too.
So, say you got your period Oct 1st... then Oct. 15th is your most fertile day... so three days before to three days after that "most fertile day on the 15th" are the days to be sure to use protection if you don't want to conceive, or the days to do it like crazy if you want to conceive. :)
Just count 15 days from the first day of your last period to get a good approximation of your most fertile time.
