Can a person whom is on salary demand for more money if they have to work a day that they normally have off? What rights do employees have if we tell them that they have to work over and above the normal hours and or days per week that they work and they say no unless we pay them for the extra time? Can I remove them legally from employment or lower their pay if they refuse to keep up their end of the contract or refuse to work the day asked to work?

You can request that a salaried worker work anytime without extra pay. However, depending on the industry it may or may not be customary for them to work off hours or a whole lot of overtime. You may have a lot of employees leaving if you're asking for extraordinary time from them.

Does their contract state they may have to work on weekends?

If I signed a contract with you and that said I will work Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, 50 weeks of the year and then you ask me to work on a Saturday and will not give me any compensation for it (money or an extra day off during the week), you bet I would say no.

And can you fire me? On what ground, my contract doesn’t state that I have to work on Saturday.

If you want to create this bad will with your employees, go for it. But your employee’s will be less motivated, despise working for you and wish to find another job. You want a high job turnover rate? And the employee’s might even steal from you depending on the type of business you are in. Trust me, I have seen it before, especially the theft.

If you really need this employee to work on the Saturday (or whenever), that is cool. Tell him he will get a regular scheduled work day off in lieu of compensation. You have him in a contract. If you want him for more, then why didn’t you put that in the contact?

Now if this is a one time thing, he is being a real jerk and perhaps you shouldn’t have him working at your company.

But if you have done this to him before or he has seen you do this to others, that could explain where his hostility is coming from.

Yes first if you have a contract with them, you can do only what it says, or can't do what it says not to.

But if there is no contract and as a person who has worked on salary for over 30 years I will tell you how it works in the working world.

If you are on salary you work any day or time they tell you to work, if they ask for more money laugh and say no seriously I have to have you work. If they refuse yes you can fire them, don't even have to tell them why if you are in a right to work state.

And unless there is a contract you can raise or lower an employees pay anytime you want

Thank you each and everyone for your answers. I try to compensate my workers as often as I can. In their contract it does state that there will be times that they have to work over and above normal work hours. Your comments are a big help.
