When I was a kid, I had a coin collect. Now after losing all tracks of what ever happen to it I have found a wheat 1944 plain penny. Fair shape. Is it piece to hang onto? What is the value?

Unfortunately, 1944 United States pennies aren't worth very much unless they are in Very Fine on up graded condition. What is the mint mark on it, please? D, S or no mint mark? If it's a 1944 D with the D Being over an S mint mark, it could be worth quite a bit of money.
