View Full Version : Need to change 2-Prong Outlet to 3-Prong Outlet

I just bought an older house (built in 1961) and as I went to hook up my computer I realized that the majority of the outlets in the house are 2-prong outlets.

I opened up one of the outlets to take a look inside. All of the electrical was run in metal conduit. It appears that there is a ground wire connected to the conduit. (I didn't go poking around too much since the circuit box in the basement has NO labels and I hadn't turned anything off. I plan on trying to map out the circuit box tomorrow.)

I picked up a bunch of tamper proof grounded outlets from Lowe's tonight and I was going to install them, but I'm not entirely sure how. I'm used to there being a ground wire I connect to the outlet, not the box. I also don't know how to tell if it's grounded all the way to the box.

Any suggestions/insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
