Hi, I was hospitalized for five days for an abcessed tooth, I had severe swelling and pain, even my ear hurt and the swelling in my neck started to close off my airway. I was discharged on the fifth day and was taking Clindamycin 150 mg 3x day, Ibuprofen 800mg 3 x day, Prilosec 1x day, and Vicodin for pain, 2 every 4-6 hours. 20 days after discharge I had two teeth extracted #29 and #31. I finished the clindamycin the day of the extractions I had IV sedation for the extractions. My daughter called the dentist the next evening after the extractions because I was still having pain and started to swell again, so he put me on Penicillin V 500mg 1 every 6 hours until gone for ten days. It is now Saturday and the extractions were done on Wednesday, and still I have no relief of the pain, my ear still huts also. I am taking the Vicodin every 4-6 hours two at a time, the pain is still as intense as it was when I was admitted to the hospital. It's the weekend and I don't know what to do, I am so wore out from the pain meds. Any suggestions? I also have been using heat on the right side of my face and jaw to help with the pain.
Thank you:(

You could try taking Ibuprofen with the Vicodin but make sure you have eaten something before you take the pills. The Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and should help. You could also try using ice instead of heat, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.

Give your pharmacist a call to see what dosage of Ibuprofen you can take. I'm guessing 400 mg.

I have also tried the ice too. I just do not see any difference in the pain from the day I was admitted to the hospital, I was pain free when dischrged until just a day or two before the extractions.
