My washing machine, Kenmore model # 110.49722991 (apartment size) doesn't sense how much water is in the tub and will continue to fill until it overflows. Twice now I have flooded my apartment with 2" of water. I don't think I will try for three. Can it be fixed or should I just get another. I have tried to stop it by pushing the buttons, but I can't tell if the water that keeps flowing is just because it is so full or if it is coming from some where else. I ended up shutting the water off at the valve.
Thanks!

My washing machine reads water level on a pressure switch. This can be identified on yours if you see a small air hose going from the bottom area of the wash tank to the controls.
If this is your case it is possible that hose has a hole in it or has come undone. If there is no pressure in the hose, then it won't actuate the switch, and thus fill forever.
If your air tube is in good shape, it could be the switch itself, it may be adjustable. Some of our dishwasher pressure switches are adjustable, but Im not sure about washers.

More than likely it is the water valve in the washer that is sticking. The best way to till is to turn it on and when it starts to fill with water turn it off and keep turning it on and off until one sticks open.
If the water turns off every time then it might be the pressure switch. That's the switch that you adjust the water level by.
There is also a tube that runs from the pressure switch down th the bottom of the tub that might have came loose or clogged.
EDIT - we sent our answers in at the same time!

Mine leaked like yours does. I took off the black hose (2" diameter, about 5" long, accordion style) under the washer and found a pinhole leak in it. Will see about a new one on Monday... not sure if that's any help to anyone... :(
