Hi there

Linda is a shopkeeper who pays her wholesaler for 12 items at 1.72 each, 40 at 8.84 each and 200 at 63p each. She receives a refund for 60 items costing 52p each which she has returned. How much does Linda pay when 8 percent cash discount is deducted from the net amount owing?
The answer is 431.52
However how do I explain this, in terms of doing the methods to get this answer?

Thanks

First thing you need to do with any word problem is pull out the numbers you need, making it math instead of sentences. And just deal with one thing at a time.

You have:
12 items at 1.72 each
40 items at 8.84 each
etc.

You have 3 categories of items purchased. Take it a step at a time. Figure out the total due for each of the 3 types of item individually. Then add them together to get the total. Then you have one return. Figure out the total amount of the return and subtract it off your total purchases. That's how much you owe.

Then calculate the 8% discount off that and subtract it off.

Can you figure this out from here?
