View Full Version : 5HP Briggs Engine Shears Flywheel Keys. Why?

I have a 5 HP Briggs on my go kart. It has sheared 3 keys already, and I am getting tired of replacing them. The keys are aluminum, and I was wondering if it would hurt to place a steel one in there. Would it do more damage than good?

Hi,
Could ruin crank. If you are having problems with the aluminum, just think of what you would have thought of the old zinc!
Two things cause shearing other than obvious over-loading; incorrect torque tightening flywheel nut/clutch and inner taper of flywheel damaged.

What is the recommended torque for the flywheel nut?

Hi,
With a few exceptions the recommended torque is between 55 and 65 ft-lb. The higher number will not harm any of the engines.
