If your pool pump housing is grounded via the green ground wire which goes back to the main braker box then why is there a ground lug on the outside of the pool pump?

Because every metal object within 5' of the water must be bonded. Ladders, deck, metal containment, lights, equipotential grid under concrete, metal skimmer etc. Guess where it all goes. The lug on the pool pump.

Close, but not exactly.

ALL larger metallic items within 5', and ALL metallic items associated with the pool must be bonded. The point is to keep all these items at the same voltage potential.
The point is not to connect them to the motor and it is NOT to ground them.

Thnks, that is what I thought. I could not see the purpose of double grouning as the housig of the pump motor is already grounded through the green ground wire at the time the motor is wired.
