View Full Version : Default installations back to C: Drive after using server Drive.

My computer was set up in an office with a server and all installations of hardware must have been set to install automatically to the server. My computer is no longer on a server and I am trying to install a new printer. In the middle of the install I get a fatal error saying that the H: drive cannot be found, that was the server drive. Not sure how to default installations back to C: Drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Typically, the files to support hardware are installed local to the machine, however the source for the files can be anywhere.

If the printer is a reinstall, one way is to use the have disk option during driver setup and manually point the wizard to driver files even if they are the same version as the ones previously used. The add hardware wizard will use the prior location for existing driver files if the printer is selected from the list.

If the printer is a new virgin install, you may need to manually search the registry for all instances of "H:" and change them to "C:" or whatever is appropriate. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pro gramFilesDir or... \DevicePath may be a culprit. *** Standard Registry Warning: Direct editing of the registry may result in an inoperable computer.
