The child in the film is called something like Madigan/Madchen etc. It is set in the 1800's or early 1900's. She lives with very progressive parents. And does things like jump off the roof with an umbrella. I think the films name is either just the child's name or possibly features the child's name in it. I've been searching for this one for years. Seen on SBS in Australia about twenty years ago.

If it helps, there is a Swedish film called "Elvira Madigan" if that's any help? It's about a girl who works for a circus. The film was made in 1967.

Thanks for trying to help :)
There are at least three or four films about her (she was a real person) a circus performer who ran away to the North Woods in Denmark with her much older and married Swedish lover in the late 1800's. After a few weeks he shot her and himself. It's the Danish answer to Romeo and Juliet. She was only 21.
But it's not my film sadly. Thanks for trying, I'm desperate to find this one. And I've googled it many times over the years :(
