The standard is 2 one hour walks a day, but a jack russel has a lot of energy, needs to use it up otherwise he'll start getting into trouble.

It really depends on you and your dog.

It also depends on the temp the day or time you are walking.. I find smaller dogs have a higher risk of heat stroke. I have a carolina dog.. he's 40 pounds. I take him for three one hour walks daily... mind you I am also home all the time

Cats, love you, but I have to disagree with the flexible leash.

Those extended leashes are meant for one thing and one thing only, hunting dogs. Most hunting dogs will take off after a scent and won't come back. The extended leash was invented for hunters that needed to be able to let their dogs track without losing their dogs.

In order to enjoy walking your dog you have to take control of the walk. Your dog should be beside you, or slightly behind. You are the leader, the leader is always in front. If your dog is allowed to go ahead, explore, then you're setting him up to be the pack leader, that's not a good idea.

A choker chain (not as bad as it sounds) and a leash long enough to tie around your waist. The dog has to learn to watch you, to follow you. If you aren't ready to stop then he isn't allowed to.

We walk our beagle 2 times a day, 1 hour each. Half way through the walk he's allowed a 5 minute sniff break. After the 5 minutes it's back to the walk, him beside me, watching me, following me, the pack leader.

Jack russels are hard to train, they're very opinionated, just like beagles. Take control or you will quickly lose it. :)

Alty, Jacks are hunting dogs. I merely suggested the leash as a means to let the little guy burn off more energy than the owner.

As you know, I don't normally use a leash, relying on fences and voice when out in public. Those are both expensive and time consuming, and not really suited to a one dog pet owner. I bow to your expertise regarding leashes.

I'd be worried about them getting tagled in the extandable leashes, I have never used them though so I don't know.

I remember walking the old Danes with Dad... scary experience, I was about 14 at the time and they both saw a rabbit...
Imagine a 14 year old kid trying to control a great dane. Thank gawd for check chains, they hated the sound they made when they pulled.

My Shih Tzu was a zig-zagger, he would walk just in front of you and go front one side of the pavement to the other for the whole walk, I walked 1 mile, he walked 2 haha :D

Our Chewy (beagle) did the zig zag, I walked straight ahead, often times I stepped on him. The good thing, he learned to watch me, to see where I was going so he could avoid getting stepped on.

That's the main thing, making them watch you. Making them move out of your way. As the leader that's your right. As a follower they should be watching you to see your next move.

Technically they are supposed to walk right beside you or even a nose behind, I just thought the zig-zagging was cute. I miss him, must post a photo! We lost him about 2 years ago.

My other Shih Tzu Bliss was great, she never went more than 2 feet away from me, didn't even need a leash when we went walking through the bush.
Problem was we have a fenced dog park here so you can let them off-leash.
I'd let her off and she would just stand next to me, I had to run across the field to get her to exercise :rolleyes:

That's Indy. He never leaves our side.

Jasper does, when he's off leash, but all it takes is a whistle and he runs back.

Chewy, I wouldn't trust him off leash if my life depended on it. ;)
