My son will be 2 in October... and he is our only child. When I have taken him to the Dr, they state he is fine because he has hit all his normal milestones right on time, or even before the "normal" rate. But he just isn't talking. And yes, his hearing is fine. :-)

His vocabulary consist of the following words. DaDa, Up, Hop, BaBa, Bob. That's it. He follows directions very well, and if we ask him where certain things are, he will point them out, or bring them to us. He can also mimic the sounds of animals. For example, if he see's a puppy, he will bark, cat, he will meow, sheep or goat he ba's... but as far as words go, nothing. I have tried working with him on books and learning DVD's for over 6 months now, and he's knows what the objects are, and we sound out the words, but he just won't say anything! I know I shouldn't worry, but I just feel bad because he tries so hard to speak. He does have his own language... as in, he will say a complete sentence with punctuation and facial expression and all, but not a word of that is of the English language. LOL I feel bad that I don't know what he is saying!?

Its not your child's fault that you don't know what he is saying. HE knows what he means and I bet if you ask him the same question over and over you get the same response right?

You just need to learn to understand his language. Ive learned 2 different dialects of toddler. Just listen to what he is saying. You should eventually pick up words. Listen to patterns and look for what repeats.

For instance, my 17 month daughter will spout out full sentences and I will get one word... baba. That can either be brother or bottle, depending on her mood.

As for him learning actual english... he will. This is how toddlers learn. Just keep talking to him as if you understand what he is saying. You talking is how he learns.

Have his hearing checked again. My son just turned 3, but when he was about 2 I had his hearing checked the first time and he passed, then after not really learning/saying new words I had his hearing checked again, he failed that time. We had tubes put in his ears and now he is learning and sounding out new things, he is still not learning as quick though, is he in a daycare? If so ask to have a speech therapist come in and evaluate him, this is your best route to go, if your child is covered under medicaid the therapist will come out and work with your child at no cost to you. Good Luck, I know little boys are some times a little slower picking up vocab.

Thanks. My Dr says that I should wait until he's right around 2 to have another hearing test done. I mentioned tubes and things, but because he has never had any problems with his ears, ever, they said he probably won't need tubes. My brother had them 3 times as a child and always battled ear infections and hearing issues... but is fine now. I guess I will just wait to see. He is not in a daycare, my Mom watches him. The doctor also mentioned that because he isn't around other toddlers, he will be behind in language... we will see..

Well when he says a "sentence" it's not different "words"... so I can't depict anything out of it... it's just one sound with different highs and lows... so it's really difficult for us to figure it out, when it's nothing really there...

Can he get his point across? If he is hungry, do you know he's hungry? That's all that really matters.
