I put files onto a disc from my school and then loaded a Microsoft file, Microsoft word loads but only squares appear in the document.

Anyone help, is it something to do with having a different os from the school, I have xp home and I think they have nt?

Please could someone help me?

The only thing I can think of is that the school probably runs office xp (I wonder what that cost them?), and I don't know if word xp saves docs in a format word 2000 should read.

You could try opening the file in another word processor, such as OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/) writer or AbiWord (http://www.abisource.com/), one of which should be able to open the file (perhaps not perfectly, but oh well :)).

You could also try opening it in a text editor, and extracting any text you might find, sans formatting information of course.

Or you could go back to the school and save the file as RTF, which I'm sure you can open.

Good luck,
