View Full Version : Kitchen Sink Drains really slow

I just installed a new kitchen and thought I was on the home stretch being that all I had to do was drop the new sink in and hook everything back up like it was...

DISMAY DISMAY DISMAY...

There were no evident problems when we took the old sink out... (it did stay removed for about 6 weeks however)

When we hooked it back up it now drains really slow and also backs up into the other bowl...
It gurgles a little bit and eventually goes down but we are talking about several minutes on a sink of water...

I have read here and tried to snake the vent pipe as I thought that must be my problem... it did not solve my problem...

1. I pulled the trap off and went in from under the sink(I only made it to the 1st T and couldn't get the snake to go further)

2. I opened the cleanout and snaked from that angle... (did not solve my problem)

3. I finally said screw it I am going to get dirty anyway... so I crawled under the house cut the pvc line where it connects to the cast iron stack and snaked from that way going up the vent.

I pulled out about a handful of what looked to be rust, dirt, hair, leaves, etc... I went in about 6-7' before I give out but nothing else was coming out either...

I bought more pvc hooked it all back up and... well... that's why I am here... still not fixed

Is the stack wide open in the attack? I don't think it goes all the way through the roof?
Do I need to snake it from there.. Is this my problem?

Wife is gone all week... kitchen has been tore out since early June on this... I was hoping when she returns I would have it finished...

Desperately in need of help here!

Trace the vent stack as it goes into the attic. It should vent through the roof but you never know hat others may have done. Rodding down the vent is a good approach even if you must do it from the roof. Rodding under the sink requires a fairly small snake, 1/4" or a small drum snake.

No luck on going down the pipe from the roof... As if the heights were not bad enough...

There was terrible disappointment when returning to ground level...

I got the snake all the way down the pipe until you get to the "S" bend going out. (This is where I went up previously... ) I really never hit anything and there was nothing evident from the snake when I pulled it out...

Then I tried to go in from the inside again... no luck there either...

Should there be any other vents besides the stack going through the roof... It is only like 2 feet from the sink/dishwasher..

Solved!! I think...

I stuck a hose down the drain under the sink with a bladder cleanout... and it is draining fine now...

Why did I not try that 1st??

Thanks for the help...

Chances are that you cleared the clog in the horizontal line in the wall. Good job, Tom
