I've had this issue with the freezer freezing up which is causing the fridge to not cool. The freezer seems to be fine. From previous posts, response below, I replaced the defrost timer. This seemed to solve the problem for about 2 weeks but now it is doing the same thing again.

I have an Amana BC121VW with the freezer on bottom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Prior response on the issue.
"From what you describe as your problem with the Maytag, it has all the classic signs of being the defrost timer switch and not the heating coil that you replaced. If the unit successfully unfreezes totally then runs for a few days or week and freezes back up it is definitely the defrost timer switch as the unit cannot properly turn on the defrost cycle to melt away the built up ice.

I know this problem backwards and forwards as I had side by side refrigerators for years and years and they always, and I do mean always, had that problem if the defrost timer switch went bad. I don't have a side by side anymore due to the switches going bad too often. I had one switch that went bad in a side by side at least once a year!! So you can see I'm well versed in the "my refrigerator is freezing up and the refrigerator part is not cooling".."

There are only 3 things that would cause your problem and they are:

Refrigerator doesn't defrost automatically.

1. Defrost heater faulty.
2. Defrost limit switch faulty.
3. Defrost timer faulty.

The only thing you didn't replace so far is the #2 item - the defrost limit switch.

I agree its got to be the limit switch or defrost thermostat. There range of operating temp. is 20 degrees - 55 degrees respectively. Good luck.
