Am getting ready to attend 600 hour
Cdl-a course on oct 2009 at Iowa community college.

Am trying to get a pre hire with a company.but wonder if wasting my

Time, see I have been on ssi disability from 2007 till present for an

Old non work related injury.am now released from doctors ready to get

Back to work after school and earn a living again.problem is most

Trrucking companies want a steady work history so not sure how much

This will effect me getting hired.

Then my 2nd poss problem is I have 3 past misdemeanor
Charges from 2000 for assault, registered handgun on person and
Volation of probation again all where misdemeanor charges.no trouble
Before or since 2000.yes the handgun was mine and legally registered

But I did not have it properly stored so was charged with it.

Appreciate any advise and or suggestions.I just want a chance to drive

A truck and proof myself after finish school.

This is one reason why taking a course that last 3 months instead of

The usual 3-5 week courses.thought would be better for experience and
For my hiring process, mostly for the experience, did not feel

Comfortable taking 3-5 week course and then drive a semi truck across
The usa.

Again thanks to all that take time to read my post, appreciate your time

I think with the history and lack of o.j.t.

You are going to have trouble with the

High-end trucking companies you can still try

If you don't have any luck you might want to

Something that's local and booming in your area

Hot shots end dumps equipment haulers etc.

You say you are on SSI disability? Will you be able to pass the medical exam that goes along with being a CDL holder? If you cannot pass that exam, then I strongly suggest that you don't waste your time with the schooling. Trucking companies are required by law to hire drivers who pass their medical exams. They cannot do otherwise. The DOT will not permit someone with a disability to drive a big rig if they cannot pass the DOT physical. I'd check with the DOT and see if your disability would enable you to either pass or fail their physical exam.

You might do better driving the hot shots. Dump trucks still require a DOT physical in order to get the proper CDL.
