I am trying to get pvc pipe to hold together would wood glue work

No. The pvc cleaner and pvc cement is what is needed.
Chemical reaction from cement melts pieces together. Makes a joint that can not be separated.

Yep got to use the right glue wood glue wood work for about 20 seconds , maybe?
